Rachel Slough (ALA Poster Session)

Each year the American Library Association (ALA) names its Emerging Leaders, a “program which enables newer library workers from across the country to participate in problem-solving work groups, network with peers, gain an inside look into ALA structure, and have an opportunity to serve the profession in a leadership capacity. It puts participants on the fast track to ALA committee volunteerism as well as other professional library-related organizations.”
This year SLIS Bloomington student Rachel Slough (current MLS/MA), and SLIS Indianapolis alumna Kristin Stout (MLS'07) were picked to be a part of this program. Rachel and Kristin will begin the program at this year’s ALA Midwinter meeting, where they will have a day of leadership training. “Afterward, it grows and develops in an online learning and networking environment for six months. The program culminates with a poster session presentation to display the results of the project planning work of each group at the ALA Annual Conference.”
- We contacted Rachel and Kristin about being chosen to participate in this program. They responded:
- Rachel Slough: "One of the best things about SLIS and working for the IU Libraries is being inspired every day by the faculty and librarians here. Carrie Donovan, Emily Okada, and Chanitra Bishop (Emerging Leader 2009), among others, have been wonderful mentors to me, and they encouraged me to apply for the Emerging Leader program. I'm really excited and thankful for this opportunity."
- Kristin Stout: "I am very excited to be selected for the 2010 ALA Emerging Leaders program, and I am grateful for this great opportunity to work with a group of library professionals from across the country to help determine the direction and future of the profession. SLIS-Indy professor Kathy Schilling and former SLIS-Indy professor Mary Alice Ball provide inspiration and support that continue to contribute to my success as a librarian."

- SLIS alumna Ning Zou (MIS/MLS'04) was also selected as a 2010 ALA Emerging Leader. We missed her name with this original article. She recently wrote that she now "serves as the instruction coordinator in the Rebecca Crown Library of Dominican University in River Forest, Illinois. She is also the president of the Chinese American Librarians Association, Midwest Chapter."
