IU President Adam Herbert was the commencement speaker. The Herald Times noted, "In his address to the new graduates, IU President Adam Herbert told them to be bold, pursue dreams, learn from failures and take risks. He referred to the Wright brothers, who 102 years ago to the day had done just that when they launched their flying creation at Kitty Hawk in North Carolina. 'May your dreams take flight', Herbert said."
A special element of the ceremony was the conferral of an "honorary doctor of laws degree upon Natsagiin Bagabandi, the former president of Mongolia, who has been instrumental in forging enduring educational ties between IU and his country, particularly exchange programs. IU has the only university-level, full-scale Mongolian studies program in North America." (excerpt from the IU Home Pages)
SLIS system-wide has averaged 190 graduates per year (over the past 10 years). For the Bloomington campus, tentative May, June and August graduates attend a ceremony in May; and December graduates have a separate ceremony. 50 students will graduate from SLIS Bloomington in December 2005 for the MLS, MIS, and Specialist degree; including students receiving dual MIS/MLS degrees, dual degrees with Comparative Literature and with Folklore, and Specializations in Music Librarianship and Special Collections.
