• "The trip was a reminder of the global impact and potential of our field."
Kuwait University (KU) invited SLIS Dean Debora Shaw to evaluate its Master of Library and Information Science program this fall. Dr. Shaw was in Kuwait for a week in November, meeting with faculty, alumni, current students, and university administrators. The Department of Library and Information Science faculty includes two SLIS alumni: Samir Hamade (MLS 1982) and Sajjad ur Rehman (MLS 1983, Ph.D. 1985). Current SLIS doctoral candidate Hesham Alsarhan is a graduate of KU’s MLIS program and plans to return to become a faculty member. Dr. Shaw commented on the site visit:
“It was a pleasure to see SLIS alumni in Kuwait. They are making a remarkable contribution to preparing the next generation for our field. Sajjad asked me to talk with his research methods class; we discussed the necessity of starting with a good idea, one that will remain interesting throughout the research project. It was a pleasure to pass Dr. Kaser’s advice to a new generation.
“The Kuwaiti students and alumni come from a remarkable range of backgrounds – from graphic design, to computer technology, to education. They have remarkable enthusiasm for using their knowledge to make a difference in society. The trip was a reminder of the global impact and potential of our field.”
