Mark your calendars! The SLIS Society of American Archivists Student Chapter (SAA-SC) is hosting a Graduate Student Conference on February 9, 2008. The Conference will be held in the Lilly Library, Indiana University, Bloomington campus.
Lisa Hooper (SLIS Master of Library Science student, and President of the IU Society of American Archivists Student Chapter) wrote:
"Postings to archival listservs have received a wonderfully strong response. Since our initial announcements to the student archives listserv, calls have come out requesting similar conferences and workshops along the eastern coastline. We are very excited to be able to meet this apparent need and offer this conference.
With six presenters from Indiana University, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Simmons College, University of Alabama, and Long Island University-C.W. Post, we will have a full program. Topics cover a full range of archival, preservation, and rare book concerns. The Saturday conference will be preceded on Friday with a workshop by Ryan Lee on Encoded Archival Description. This workshop, which will introduce the basic concepts of EAD and provide encoding practice, is open to students and professionals in the field."
Excerpts from the Conference website:
Purpose:
This conference presents a forum for students interested in archives, rare books, and special collections to come together, share their work & experiences, and learn from one another. While providing a wonderful experience, conferences designed for the professional archivist are often intimidating for students, making it difficult to fully share experiences and to ask those burning questions that nobody else has asked. Geared specifically toward graduate students, this conference hopes to create an atmosphere free of intimidation and full of opportunities for students to learn from one another.
Workshop: Brad Cook, "Working with Photographs in Archives"
How can you tell the difference between a daguerreotype, an ambrotype, and a tintype? What does a cyanotype look like? What is vinegar syndrome? How can that stamp on the back of a carte-de-visite help you date the image? What are some of the most basic things we can do to help protect and preserve photographs? In this workshop we will explore these questions and many others that will help you work with photographs in your archival repository. We will look at basic supplies you should have on hand, strategies for identifying persons, buildings, and other objects in your images. Included will be many examples of photographs that can be found in the Indiana University Office of University Archives and Records Management. A tour will conclude the workshop.
