SLIS students, faculty and alumni have had special opportunities with this IU-based project to collect, preserve, and make available information about Liberia. Recently a SLIS intern met with the former Interim President of Liberia Amos Sawyer (now an IU professor) to discuss the collection. Dr. Verlon Stone, the Project Coordinator, writes about SLIS contributions:
"I must tell you how valuable the School of Library and Information Science students have been to the Liberian Collections Project. Chris Eaton, Meredith Wagner, and Marybeth Gaudette have all done excellent work in their internships. And their work has produced real and important work 'products'. Some are already posted on the OnLiberia.org Web site and much more has been prepared for distribution as work plans and supportive documentation to the Liberian Collections Project Advisory Board members for their annual meeting (August 2003).
SLIS students Fagdeba Bakoyema and John Russell also worked with us this summer. I'll be recruiting more SLIS students to fill positions in description and arrangement, preservation and Web programming as we continue to process our backlog of collections.
SLIS faculty members Phil Bantin (IU archivist) and Jake Nadal, MLS'01, (Head of Preservation for IU Libraries) have also provided invaluable insight. Looking forward to another good year of cooperation with the IU School of Library and Information Science."
