SLIS faculty member Lokman Meho recently announced that a L524 Information Sources and Services pathfinder project by current MLS student Lana Gottschalk has been accepted for publication in Behavioral & Social Sciences Librarian. Lana graduates this semester.
In addition to describing the content of the pathfinder and the sources and methods used to identify materials on Carol Gilligan, the Psychologist, Feminist, Educator, and Philosopher, the introduction of Lana's pathfinder states:
"Born in November of 1936, Carol Friedman married James Gilligan and studied at Swarthmore College for her undergraduate degree in English literature, Radcliffe for her Masters in clinical psychology, and Harvard for her Ph.D. in social psychology. Upon finishing her degrees, she became an assistant professor at Harvard and continued there through associative professor and professor positions until 2002, when she moved to a University Professor position at New York University's School of Law. While at Harvard, she helped to develop the Gender Studies program, serving as the first professor of this subject area. Hailed as one of the twentieth century's most influential psychologists and educators, Gilligan sparked her career in the limelight with the groundbreaking studies set out in the book, In a Different Voice: Psychological Theory and Women's Moral Development. In this work, she introduces a new philosophy of women's personal and moral development, splitting from the tradition of Freud, Piaget, and Kohlberg, which held women as morally inferior to men because of their differences in development. Gilligan set forth the opinion, with research to back it up, that the experiences of men and women are vastly divergent, requiring separate theories of investigation, rather than passing off one group as superior or inferior to the other (NYU School of Law webpage). Following the publication of this book, Gilligan conducted more research and studies and has produced a great amount of literature explaining and illustrating her findings and conclusions."
