SLIS faculty member Ying Ding, was interviewed for the bi-monthly newsletter Research Trends (Issue 20, November 2010). The article by Michelle Pirotta is titled "Popularity or Prestige: Are you Making the Right Impact?" was for the Expert Opinion section.
- Excerpts:
-
- "Ying Ding … believes citations from recognized experts should count for more."
- "Ding makes a clear distinction between: 'popularity, which is how many citations a paper receives, irrelevant of who is making the citation, and prestige, which gives greater weight to citations coming from highly cited papers."
- "And how should researchers work towards this prestige? According to Din, 'you have to write better papers! … You also need to reserve time for critical thinking. Keep asking yourself what is missing, what can I add? There's no point following the crowd.'"
The interview also refers to a recent article that Dr. Ding co-authored with SLIS Dean Blaise Cronin. "Popular and/or Prestigious? Measures of Scholarly Esteem" was published by Elsevier in the journal Information Processing and Management (Volume 47, Issue 1, January 2011, pages 80-96).
