An interview with Mary D'Eliso, MLS'89, children's librarian at Monroe County Public Library, is featured in Straight from the Stacks: A Firsthand Guide to Careers in Library and Information Science (by Laura Townsend Kane), just published by the American Library Association.
D'Eliso, who has taught L533: Library Materials for Children and Young Adults at SLIS, considers the ability to adapt and to work in a strategic manner central to children's librarianship. She speaks of the special challenges and satisfactions of her career choice:
"From the preschooler who wants a book that's 'scary-but-not-too-scary' to the patron who would like information about the cultural impact of the Cinderella tale and its variants, the librarian must be able to adapt to each patron's unique needs."
