IU SLIS ALA Student Chapter The ALA-SC jump started the Fall 2003 semester with its monthly Happy Hour, raising more initiation money than at any other social event this year.
The first Lunch and Learn session featured Sylvia Turchin, Western European Cataloging section head, who presented an essential session on the effects of the USA PATRIOT Act in the academic and public library sectors across the country.
ALA-SC participated alongside Beta Phi Mu in the annual Fall Career Week, which featured practical advice and planning tips from professional librarians at various levels in their careers. The chapter also be awarding its annual ALA Conference Scholarship, which provides flight and accommodation to the ALA professional meeting with the opportunity to work at the event.
The Executive Council hopes to continue the Lunch and Learn brownbag series through Spring semester 2004 with sessions on federated searching, resume building, professional conference attendance, and more.
Other Upcoming events include behind-the-scenes tours of the Lilly Library, and a fundraising drive with ALA-SC/SLIS travel mugs. Meetings are once per month, and membership is a one-time fee of $8. Visit our website for more information: http://ella.slis.indiana.edu/g/alasc/index.html
